CEO peer groups compared: YPO, EO, Vistage and informal circles

How YPO, EO and Vistage peer groups differ: who can join, group size, how forums work. Facts from their official sites, plus informal circles.

Short answer

  1. YPO, EO and Vistage all bring leaders together in small, confidential peer groups, but for different people. According to their own sites, YPO is for chief executives under 45 who meet company-size thresholds.
  2. EO is for founders and owners with at least US$1 million in revenue. Vistage runs monthly groups of 12–16 CEOs of US$5 million+ companies, guided by a Chair.
  3. Informal circles have no criteria except the ones the group sets.

People who run companies in Vienna ask this question more often than you'd think: "Should I join YPO or EO?", "Is Vistage the same thing?", "What's the difference from just having dinner with other founders?" Most comparisons online are written by one of the organisations or by someone selling a competing programme. This one uses only what each organisation publishes about itself on its official website, as of 16 October 2026. We don't compare prices: they change, and they depend on chapter and country.

A note on who's writing: Stilla Circle is not a peer group in this sense and is not affiliated with any of these organisations. We have no reason to rank them, and we don't.

What is a CEO peer group?

A CEO peer group is a small, confidential group of leaders who meet regularly to discuss real business and personal questions with peers, rather than with consultants or their own team. Most organisations call the core unit a forum. The idea behind all of them is similar: the people who understand your problem best are often people with a similar job in a different company.

YPO

YPO describes itself as welcoming leaders "since 1950" and counts more than 38,000 chief executives. Its membership page is the most specific of the three. To qualify, a person should be under 45, the top operational leader of a company or division with final decision-making authority and full P&L accountability, and the company should meet size thresholds. Examples: US$16 million+ in revenue for sales, service or manufacturing companies, US$13 million+ for agencies, and 50 full-time employees, or 15+ with at least US$2.75 million in annual employee compensation. Financial institutions have their own criteria.

The forum is described as the centre of the experience: around 3,800 forums worldwide, where small groups of members, and separately their spouses and young adult children, meet "in an atmosphere of confidentiality, respect and trust".

EO (Entrepreneurs' Organization)

EO focuses on the person who built or owns the business. Its membership page asks for a founder, co-founder, owner or controlling shareholder of a company with at least US$1 million in annual revenue. EO's homepage lists about 20,568 members and Accelerator participants and more than 220 chapters in more than 60 countries (the page gives both 226 and "more than 220", and both 66 and 61 countries).

Its forum is described as "a tight-knit group of 8–12 fellow entrepreneurs" for confidential peer-to-peer learning.

For Vienna specifically: EO announced EO Austria on 10 February 2025, its 24th chapter in Europe and 222nd worldwide, based in Vienna.

Vistage

Vistage counts 45,000+ members in 40 countries and says it has worked with 250,000 leaders since 1957. Its model is the most structured of the three. Local, noncompeting peers meet monthly in groups of 12 to 16 CEOs. Each group has a Chair, described as an accomplished CEO coach, who runs the meetings and offers monthly one-to-one coaching. Vistage also mentions a proprietary method for working through members' issues and input from outside experts.

The core CEO programme is for leaders of US$5 million+ companies. Vistage also lists separate programmes for smaller companies, executives and managers.

YPO selects by role and company size, EO by ownership, and Vistage by company size plus a guided monthly format. All three put a small confidential group at the centre.

Informal circles

Not every peer group belongs to an organisation. Many founders meet in informal circles: a few people who met at an event, a dinner that turned into a monthly habit, a WhatsApp group that sometimes becomes a real conversation. They have no membership criteria, no fees and no method, only the rules the group agrees on.

There is no reliable data on how many exist or how well they work, so we won't invent any. Their strength and weakness are the same thing: they depend entirely on who is in them.

How to read the differences

The research doesn't tell anyone which format to choose, and neither do we. But the official descriptions show three questions on which the formats clearly differ:

  1. Who decides who's in? Role and company size (YPO, Vistage), ownership (EO), or the group itself (informal).
  2. Is there a guide? A Chair and a method (Vistage), no guide mentioned on the pages we reviewed (YPO, EO), or nobody (informal).
  3. How big is the group? 8–12 (EO), 12–16 (Vistage), "small" (YPO), anything (informal).

What we know and what we don't

What we know (from official pages)

  • Entry criteria, network size and group sizes as published
  • EO has a Vienna chapter since 2025
  • Vistage groups meet monthly with a Chair

What we don't know

  • How each chapter in Vienna actually works today
  • Fees in Austria (not compared here)
  • Independent evidence comparing outcomes between formats

Where Stilla Circle fits

Stilla Circle is not a peer advisory group: there is no method, no Chair and nobody gives advice. It is preparing small evenings in Vienna for people who run companies or invest: up to twelve people, chosen one by one by value rather than by revenue, with phones by the door, no titles and no selling. Some people may be in a forum and come to the table too; the two answer different questions.
